A rather unexpected victory for me today with this cache. As with the previous one I had attempted and not found earlier (Morier Park), I came to this one with little to no supplies, and was prepared about as... something... not prepared... well. Let's say runny eggs.
So, here I am, as prepared as runny eggs, heading towards the cache. I at first had tried finding parking on that side of the road, but when I decided that parking in some random business's parking would be a bad idea, I worked my way to the other side of the street. Residential roads ahoy! Luckly for me, there was a fairly close spot to boot.
I crossed the street (very little traffic at the time... my luck was still going up). At this point, my luck decided that it needed to even itself out again, and decided to sink every one of my footsteps down an additional 3 inches from the previous person's steps I was working with. I mean... I'm not a heavy guy (135 pounds at last check), but today's warmth must have softened the hell out of that snow. It LOOKED solid, but lemme tell ya... it was anything but.
Anyhoo... working my way across the snowy park, I emptied my shoes on the other side and headed towards the coordinates. I quickly realized that I would have excellent cover from being seen by the traffic of the road, and took advantage of it immediately. Crouch-walking my way into the cache vicinity, I discovered something else. Excellent cover == very little light. Me in my infinite wisdom not thinking to bring a flashlight or gloves, found myself looking at a location that would have a million possible 'positions' the cache could be in. Having virtually no visibility, I just decided to cram my hand into wherever I could and cross my fingers. I didn't have much hope to say the least.
Coincidentally however, my luck took this particular moment to cheer me up from the DNF that took place earlier. Now, I didn't exactly FEEL the cache, or even know that I had touched it immediately. I did however HEAR that I had touched what could have only been the cache. My hand sliding over bark, wood, snow, and I think there might have been some plastic bag or something there too, about 15 seconds into searching I heard a dull, hollow thud. Tracing my hand back over where I had heard that sound, I managed to create it again. Feeling around, I discovered that what I was blindly groping at wasn't a naturally-created shape, so to speak. It took a bit of fanangling to get it out, but I indeed pulled out a cache container .
Walking out of the cache vicinity, I got slightly more light. At least enough to make out what I was doing, anyway. After I signed the logbook (of which I think I put 'TNL: Chainmail ball', when I should have put T: Panda TB, L: Chainmail ball'... sorry 'bout that), I poked around at the contents. I was quite surprised to find not one, but TWO chainmail balls already dwelling inside the cache!
I pondered whether to collect them, since I'm COMPLETELY out of already-made ones (I've got rings, but need to put 'em together sometime... but I lack time usually). However, I decided that it just didn't 'feel right' to recollect them myself like that. What would I put in the logbook? Took: Two chainmail balls, Left: One chainmail ball? That just looks bad, y'know. Sometime or another though, I should create an event to finding the most chainmail balls and giving prizes for the top 3 finders or something. But... probably not, because that STILL feels like I'm just using people to take them back.
Bah, unless I'm handed a sack of 'em at random, I'll continue to make 'em. Less moral dilemmas .
In either case... thanks for the cache. It was a beautiful day to go out for 'em too (+2 celcius in January? Yay for Mother Nature!), so I'm glad I was able to find at least this one .
Took: Fuzzy Friend Panda Pez Dispenser TB (whew, long name)
Left: Logbook entry and chainmail ball
