Hmm... looks like a lot of people found this cache today. Mildly surprised I didn't run into any other geocachers while I was there. Nonetheless, since I was out geocaching in general for some of today, I decided to take a few swipes at some of the caches that were on my DNF list. Of course, I'm going to as well use this opportunity to tackle some of the caches nearby to those previous DNF's as well . I had actually passed relatively close by this cache on Sept. 5th, when I was walking around here with my wife. However, for whatever reason I hadn't tackled it back then, and it sorta annoyed me that I passed by a geocache so close. Today... I would solve that annoyance!
I could only park vaguely nearby, since it seemed to be fairly busy around here today. Then again... gorgeous day out, combined with virtually everybody having the day off... not that hard to achieve. I headed in the general direction of ground zero to the nice sounds of bagpipes playing in the distance (it seems there was a bagpiping busker on the bridge). Thankfully, most of the foot traffic was either on the paved sidewalk, or in the main fields on the other side of the road through the park. Inside the trees, it was relatively quiet. Slowly meandering my way down the trail, I waited for a relatively quiet opportunity to head over towards ground zero. However... I don't know if it was the tree cover or something, but ground zero for me seemed to... not make all that much sense. I hunted around here and there, and couldn't even fathom how a cache could hide there. Expanding my search a little bit, I searched one of the more obvious places and came up empty. However, perseverance pays off. A scant few minutes later, and I had located the cache . It seems as though the season's natural camouflage is helping with the hide. Although, I wouldn't have called this cache winter-friendly... but who knows, maybe I just looked around here in winter.
So having located the cache, I took it and headed about 10 meters away so that I could crouch behind some large trees, leaving myself completely hidden from passing people. Having read the description in my palm pilot midway through hunting, I had a gist of the cache idea... but was quite surprised by the extent of it! I skimmed through the logbook and checked out some of the other drawings. Gotta say... there's a lot of talented geocachers apparently .
I myself don't exactly have the greatest drawing skills though. Albeit I have a webcomic, it's entirely sprite-based, thus leaving me without the need to draw by hand. However, the namesake of the game the comic is based on... ahh... HIM I've drawn a decent number of times! Given the ample colours to work with, I set about signing my name, and then drawing a Metroid as my monster of choice . It came out fairly well, given I was working from a crouched state, trying to not be conspicuous at the same time.
After several minutes, I had completed my artwork, and replaced the cache as found. Awesome idea though... I kinda wish there was more caches along this same vein . Although it's probably for the best I found it now instead of a month ago... I don't know how much my wife would have complained if I was sitting there for a while drawing . But definitely thanks for placing the cache... it'll be one of the more memorable ones for me to be sure . Once the logbook is full, you should consider scanning the pages and posting them to the cache page or something.
