After chilling at my sister's place in Carman for the day (with some geocaching with them in Elm Creek), I decided to try something new. Typically, I take the #3 highway from Winnipeg to Carman, and sadly there's no geocaches along there (or at least none that I haven't already found long ago). However... I don't know if I've EVER taken the #2 highway! The last time I was in Carman, we had gone for a few geocaches in Elm Creek, and I noticed that the #2 highway was here. Hence, after leaving my sister's place this time around, I decided to swing North instead for the way home. A quick scan of the GPS told me that there was at least a few geocaches on the #2 that could sustain me for the day. I ended up only going after this one for now... partially to leave some caches for the next trip out to/from Carman, partially due to time (it was somewhere at or after 8:00pm).
As I neared the cache, I think that I discovered what the cache description mentions... that parking is limited. Quite limited, in fact. Not particularly wanting to leave the car on the side of the #2 highway with the hazard lights on, I decided to pull partially onto that road/driveway that leads up to what I'm guessing is a golf course (can't remember what the signs nearby said it was called), I pulled as far as I could onto the side about halfway between the highway and the bridge there, and hopped out of the car. And MAN, I'm glad I'm here about now, and not a month ago or something. The ditches seem to be quite steep (comparatively to others I've seen), and I imagine the area has gotten quite wet in the past. Today however, it was dry as a bone, and I was able to easily make my way to the cache.
Once I got about 10 meters from the cache, I realized that I had a lot of places that it could be hiding. At first I had thought it was probably somehow attached to the big sign there, but after passing it, I realized it wasn't going to be nearly that narrowed down . However, luck was with me and the light happened to glint off the side of the container .
Working my way to the geocache, I opened it up... to find pretty much exactly what the last cacher had described. The contents were completely drenched, and there was about a half-inch of water on the bottom of the container. Which is quite unusual I thought, since the lid doesn't appear to have any holes or cracks or anything, and it was upright so water shouldn't have been able to just fall into it or anything. Peculiar.
In either case, I dumped the water out of the container and shook off all of the contents as best I could. Absolutely everything is drenched in there, but at least most of the items were plastic or metal (that doesn't appear to have started rusting yet). The logbook was equally drenched, and completely soaked with water. It was at least turned to the right page however, and thanks to my having a Fisher Space Pen as my geocaching pen, I had no problems writing on the wet paper without smearing or tearing the paper or anything . But yeah... you probably want to look into either a waterproof logbook or perhaps giving the cache in general a good once-over.
One chainmail ball later, and I closed up the cache once again. It's replaced in the same place as I had found it, and imagine there's no possible way for water to once again get inside of it like that again... but given it had that much water before, and the lid was on when I found it... who knows.
Thanks for giving me something to go after on the trip from Carman, and I'm noticing at least one other Sunday Kruz cache for the next time I'm heading out there .
Took: Nothing
Left: Logbook entry and chainmail ball
