Mutual hatred
In strip 25, we had, in order of appearance, Mario from "Super Mario Brothers 2", The boy from "A Boy And His Blob", and Link from "Zelda 2, Adventure of Link" (in the last 2 frames). The rocks in the cart there are from Adventure Island 2. In strip 26, all we had was Higgins from "Adventure Island 2" and Thief from "Final Fantasy" (yes... the first one).
As an added note, this is Ridley's first appearance in the comic strip.

Metroid, Samus, Kraid, and the rest of 'em are all property of Nintendo, who to my knowledge wouldn't do anything such as sue me or shut poor Planet Zebeth down, because they're so damn nice, and Metroid kicks ass : }
